Nagoya, Japan, October 3, 2026: Indian men’s hockey team achieved a historic victory by crushing Malaysia 5–1 in the final of the 2026 Asian Games, successfully defending their gold medal for the first time in the history of the tournament.
Led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian team delivered a commanding performance, showcasing attacking brilliance, tactical discipline and exceptional teamwork to emerge victorious in the summit clash.

Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring in 11th minutes through a penalty corner and went on to score twice in the final. Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra also found the net, completing India’s emphatic victory. Malaysia managed to score just once through Shello Silverius in the 14th minute.
The second half was largely dominated by India, with the Indian team taking complete control of the proceedings. Malaysia, who had looked competitive in the first half, appeared increasingly defensive, struggling to match India’s pace, pressing and attacking intensity. India’s superior ball possession, structured attacks and relentless pressure gradually pushed the Malaysian side onto the back foot, eventually turning a closely contested final into a one-sided affair.”
The triumph marks India’s fifth men’s hockey gold medal at the Asian Games, following their previous victories in 1966, 1998, 2014 and 2023.
The victory also secured India’s direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, adding further significance to an already historic achievement.

India entered the final after a thrilling 4–3 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the semifinal, demonstrating tremendous resilience and fighting spirit.
In another remarkable achievement, both Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams clinched gold medals at the same Asian Games for the first time. The women’s team had earlier ended a 44-year wait for the Asian Games title with a memorable victory over China.
The men’s team’s triumph is not merely another addition to India’s medal tally; it is a powerful statement of the country’s growing dominance in Asian hockey and a proud moment for millions of hockey fans.
The Indian men’s hockey team’s performance was a testament to their dominance in the sport, with India winning 85 medals, including 21 golds, at the Asian Games 2026.
