O’Romeo: Film Review
O’Romeo is a contemporary romantic drama that reimagines the timeless idea of intense, and not just about rebellious love, but lust and revenge too. The film shows how a person transforms when he falls in love.
In 2009, Vishal Bhardwaj surprised audiences by turning Bollywood’s “chocolate boy” Shahid Kapoor into one of Hindi cinema’s most complex anti-heroes in KAMINEY. Until then, Shahid was largely associated with romantic and soft roles. Bhardwaj dismantled that image completely.
In 2014 With Haider, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Bhardwaj pushed Shahid into darker emotional territory. Set against the political turmoil of Kashmir.
In Rangoon Sahid Played Army Officer was another great film by Vishal, Shahid’s performance was raw, layered, and tragic.

O’Romeo set in Mumbai in 1995, the story follows Ustara (Shahid Kapoor), a contract killer. He works for Intelligence officer Khan (Nana Patekar) and takes money from him to eliminate criminals. One day, Afshan (Triptii Dimri) approaches Ustara and asks him to eliminate four people who killed her husband. She says Jalal (Avinash Tiwary) played a key role in her husband’s murder. However, Ustara refuses to kill Jalal and sends her away. What happens next? Why does Afshan end up staying with Ustar? Does he fall in love with her? What happens in the end? The film has the answers.

The lead actor brings vulnerability and charm to the role of “Romeo,” portraying the emotional turbulence of a young man torn between passion and reality. The female lead complements him with a balanced performance, portraying innocence mixed with quiet strength. Their chemistry forms the emotional backbone of the film.

Supporting characters Avinash Tiwary, Nana Patekar, Farida Jalal, and Disha Patani play a crucial role in driving the conflict. At times, some performances feel slightly dramatic, but they suit the genre’s emotional tone. Both Tamannaah Bhatia and Vikrant Massey had a special appearance, which was indeed one of the surprise elements of the film.
The soundtrack stands out as one of the film’s strengths. The romantic numbers enhance the narrative, particularly during montage sequences.
Cinematography captures scenic backdrops beautifully, giving the film a soft, dreamy aesthetic. Editing is decent, though the second half feels slightly stretched.
O’Romeo is a heartfelt romantic drama that will appeal to audiences who enjoy emotional love stories with music and family conflict. Though it doesn’t break new ground in storytelling, it succeeds in delivering an earnest tale of love and sacrifice.
