Pre-Poll Alliance with Congress a Tough Decision: Omar Abdullah
Srinagar, August 30, 2024 – In a recent address to party workers, Omar Abdullah, the vice president of the National Conference (NC), opened up about the challenging decision to form a pre-poll alliance with the Congress party and the complexities involved in the subsequent seat-sharing arrangements. Abdullah, who has been a key figure in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape, detailed the nuanced and difficult nature of the alliance, underscoring the sacrifices made by his party to achieve this strategic partnership.
Speaking to a gathering organized by the Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Abdullah described the decision to enter into a pre-poll alliance with Congress as one fraught with difficulty. The National Conference, he explained, had to make significant compromises, including relinquishing certain seats where the party was confident of a victory. This strategic maneuver was intended to consolidate the opposition’s position and enhance the overall electoral prospects against their rivals.
“This was not an easy decision by any means,” Abdullah remarked. “We had to sacrifice seats in constituencies where we believed we had a strong chance of winning. This was a tough call, but it was made with the larger goal in mind of presenting a united front that would ultimately benefit the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”
Abdullah highlighted the immediate impact of the alliance, noting that its significance became apparent when Ghulam Nabi Azad, a former chief minister and prominent Congress leader, withdrew from active campaigning. Azad’s departure from the campaign trail was seen as a strategic move that underscored the seriousness and depth of the alliance’s commitment.
The National Conference leader emphasized that this alliance was not just a political maneuver but a collective effort aimed at addressing the pressing issues faced by the residents of Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing ongoing issues in the region, Abdullah criticized the current administration for its handling of various grievances. He pointed out that many people in Jammu and Kashmir have been subjected to undue hardships, including arbitrary detentions and harassment. In response to these concerns, Abdullah reaffirmed his party’s commitment to its electoral promises, including the complete removal of the Public Safety Act (PSA) from the region if they are elected to power.
“Our manifesto clearly outlines our intentions to eliminate the PSA,” Abdullah stated. “This law has been used to oppress and intimidate individuals, and it is high time we put an end to such practices. Our focus is on restoring justice and ensuring that the rights of the people are safeguarded.”
